Hopeless Romancers marks the third LP from Seattle-based Eggshells — their first for Oregon imprint Jenny Invert Records. The trio of Peter Verdoes (In Praise of Folly, Can the Boy Tell Time), brother Benjamin Verdoes (Iska Dhaaf, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, In Praise of Folly) and Sera Han return with a stunning new set of robustly ethereal deep-space synth and guitar loops, anchored in moody trip-hop beats and wrapped in a lo-fi veneer and garage rock sensibility.
The spectral eight-song album is a thematic exploration of the highs, lows, and endless tribulations of navigating the chaotic world of modern relationships. Co-vocalist Sera Han brings new energy and a fresh song-writing perspective as a queer first-generation Korean American, to play with the Verdoes brothers’ decades of collaboration. The dark, layered soundscapes of Hopeless Romancers intertwine with the emotional fragility of shadowy vocals, creating a striking and gorgeous collection of songs.
